June 21 has been declared as the International Yoga Day. Sri Swami Sivananda writes that Yoga is a way of life, not divorced from it; Yoga is not forsaking of action, but is efficient performance in the right spirit.

Amongst other things, Yoga is about cultivating values such as friendliness, non-violence, and desirelessness. It is about doing the best we possibly can, in whatever we set out to do. It is about assuming and fulfilling our wordly responsibilities with equanimity and grace. It is about compassion.

Compassion in our world of disabilities has to be about equipping our adults with skills that they need to live happy and productive lives in their own community. It has to be about teaching, and reteaching if needed, every part of the skill, in a way that our individuals will learn what they need to learn. We have to provide systematic opportunities for individuals to become proficient and we have to truly value their effort.

All of this requires on the part of the `teacher’, a steadfastness of purpose, and patience. It does not require a special education degree. Kavita understands what skills our adults need to learn and teaches them with complete focus and caring. She is on the path of Yoga.
